Are you struggling to play your favourite sports because of a sharp pain or ache on the ball of your foot?

Is it a drag not being able to walk or run without limping?

Have the painkillers and anti inflammatories failed you?

Metatarsalgia is a common overuse injury. The term describes pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot. It is often thought of as a symptom of other conditions, rather than as a specific disease.Forefoot injuries, including metatarsalgia, are common in athletes who participate in high-impact sports.Athletes who take part in high-impact sports involving running or jumping are at high risk of forefoot injury. While track and field runners are exposed to the highest level of traumatic forces to the forefoot, many other athletes, including tennis, football, baseball, and soccer players, often have forefoot injuries.
The primary symptom of metatarsalgia is pain at the end of one or more of the metatarsal bones. The pain is typically aggravated when walking or running. Athletes who participate in high-impact activities and may also have an inflammatory condition such as bursitis often have diffuse forefoot and midfoot pain. Most often, the pain comes on over a period of several months, rather than suddenly.

If you are suffering from Metatarsalgia, you will sometimes experience sharp pain and at other times it will just be downright achy, just limping around the house. First thing in the morning, especially, this pain can really get you down and give you a sense of hopelessness.

Trying to overcome this  problem on your own is quite difficult. The very nature of this injury is slow onset and also can be be very difficult to rectify. As a runner who was afflicted by this I completely understand the pain and frustration you are going through!

Metatarsalgia is a slow injury to heal.

Firstly the blood supply in this area is quite poor which exacerbates the problem.

Secondly you put pressure through this area every time you walk, all day re injuring your foot, causing disruption to the healing process.

Thirdly it’s very sensitive to touch and can by it’s very nature add to a compensatory problem elsewhere.
