I had a bad knee injury from a keep fit class which I ignored and continued exercising until the leg went from under me. I enjoy running and my first thought was ‘I am going to be out for quite a while with this’! I could hardly walk and for quite a while could put very little weight on the leg.
I decided to see a sports therapist and Peter Maher was the obvious choice being a runner himself and he is local to Carrigaline and would know how to get me back on my feet as soon as possible.
Peter has a wonderful setup just outside Carrigaline where you spend 20 minutes or so warming your muscles up in a sauna and hot tub in preparation for the manipulation of the muscles, tendons and ligaments that he is going to work on. It was a slow process working over many weeks. I also attended an Orthopaedic Surgeon who told me I needed surgery to fix the knee so I was booked me in for surgery on 9th May. I always feel the surgery should be a last resort and while waiting for the date I did some research where I learned that they don’t repair but rather cut away the affected part in the knee and it’s not always successful. You are also three times more likely to need a knee replacement in the future.
So I put all my faith in the hands of Peter Maher and I cancelled the surgery and continued with the Physio treatment. Slowly but surely I began to feel the difference in my knee. I had to do exercises and ‘ice’ the knee as prescribed b Peter and I was religious about doing that. Eventually, Peter gave me a programme of walking/jogging to get me started back running and stretches to follow up.
What I really liked about Peter was that he was as anxious as I was for me to get back to normal but made me take it slowly and carry out his instructions to the letter. It took time but 6 months down the road I am running again without having had surgery and the trauma of that.
I would highly recommend Maher Sports Therapy for anybody who has injuries and who wants like me to avoid surgery.
The whole experience was business-like and friendly and I always felt very comfortable with Peter and his son Kevin who works alongside him.
